Family lawyers are calling on the lord chancellor to act now to introduce “no-fault” divorce and not let Britain’s split from the EU allow the reform fall by the wayside.

The head of the family justice group Resolution will today warn of the dangers of allowing a preoccupation with Brexit to overshadow reform to reduce conflict between separating couples.

In a message to the government at the group’s annual conference today, its chairwoman, Margaret Heathcote, will say: “There are many weighty issues you’re dealing with at the moment, not least trying to negotiate your own non-confrontational divorce from the EU.

“But if you’re separating, and you’re faced with having to make unnecessary and unhelpful accusations against your ex on the divorce petition, there is nothing more important than this reform in the law.”
